Mahira Khan, adored by millions of fans at home and abroad, has responded to the #MeToo movement – in the wake of a suicide committed by an innocent man.
As a professor, not guilty of any impropriety, had been lied about by a girl that resulted in him ultimately committing suicide, Mahira Khan has responded how it angers her when the #MeToo movement is misused.
She wrote on Twitter, “It angers me that an innocent man would kill himself because of being [wrongly] accused and it boils my blood that another can roam around free after raping someone. Whether you misuse the #metoo movement or delay accountability on it, the result is the same – death.”
#MeToo began in Pakistan as a result of allegations made by Meesha Shafi against Ali Zafar. Since then, a number of cases from the entertainment industry have come up. Maheen Khan and Frieha Altaf also admitted they were sexually abused at a young age while certain others have equally heartbreaking #MeToo struggles they are dealing with.
Whether #MeToo movement grows beyond social media to litigation of these cases or not, it must be reiterated that all humanity matters and lying to a point that a man is forced to take his own life will not only hurt this movement but destroys lives, both figuratively and literally.
